Our First Book. Our Story. Our Voice.
This was more than just a children’s book for me.
This was a release, reflection, and a prayer answered.
Writing The Black Autistic Dinosaur was intense not because it was hard to write, but because I wanted it to be right.
I wanted it to rhyme, feel joyful, and most importantly….
I wanted it to tell Croix’s story beautifully, proudly, and truthfully.
Getting My Feet Wet and My Heart Involved
Since this is our very first book, I was getting my feet wet in every way.
I had never done this before, but something deep inside me said,
“Even if this book only blesses one family… it matters.”
I prayed.
I rewrote pages over and over.
I asked Croix questions. I got his input.
I sat with my thoughts reflecting on this journey.
I couldn’t find many dinosaur books out there with Black kids in them.
So… I wrote one.
Representation Matters: Even in Prehistoric Worlds
Croix lives and breathes dinosaurs. He thinks he is one half the time. He uses dinosaur play to cope when he’s nervous especially around new kids. He’ll crouch, roar, stomp like a T-Rex until he feels safe. It’s his comfort zone. His protector. His identity when the world feels overwhelming.
So when it came time to name the main character in the book, I asked him, “Should we call him Croix-Rex?” His face lit up! That was it! There was no other option!
This story isn’t just about autism. It’s not just about dinosaurs. It’s about our family, our culture, our journey, and the beautiful intersection of difference.
Telling Our Story, Loud and Proud
There are a lot of children’s books out there. But not many are told from our standpoint. Not many show the Black autistic child thriving. Not many celebrate the unique quirks, the real experiences, and the specific magic of a story like Croix’s. There’s a wide spectrum of different abilities and capabilities out there. Each journey deserves to be told. That’s what I hope to do. This book is just the beginning.
One Book Now. A Whole Shelf Someday.
I want a shelf full of books where my child (and kids like him) can see themselves:
Where they’re the heroes.
Where they’re the explorers.
Where they’re the scientists, the artists, the dreamers… or even the dinosaurs. 🦖
So here’s to the first book, the first step, the first roar.
To Croix-Rex, my real-life Dino King.
This one is for you! And so is the next one….
You are the story and the story is just beginning!
✨ The Black Autistic Dinosaur is releasing soon! July is my goal!
I hope it brings joy to your home, representation to your shelf, and light to your journey. Thank you for being a part of ours. 💛
