Lessons Still Happen—Even When the Schedule Falls Apart

Today was supposed to be a “get it done” day. Book work. Seated work. Structured learning attempt. But Croix had other plans.

He did everything to get out of doing it. And honestly? I tried to meet him halfway:

He was cold. So he got his robe.

He wanted me, not dad, to teach. Done.

He preferred pen over pencil. Okay.

He wanted to sit on the floor instead of a chair. Fine.

And after all that?

He gave me a thumbs down like I hadn’t tried at all. 😩 So… we pivoted.

He pulled out our Lifecycle Box and picked the frog.

We leaned into it. We went through the hands-on lesson. We even watched a YouTube video about the frog’s life cycle. He was locked in. And you know what? No math got done. Not one lesson was completed.

But he learned something today! A win is a win!

Because in homeschooling, especially with a neurodivergent child…flexibility is survival.

3 Ways to Pivot Without Losing the Learning

1. Offer Choices That Still Count

If your child resists your plan, pivot to something related but let them choose.

Croix didn’t want to do math, but frog science? That was a yes.

2. Accommodate Without Enabling

Changing the seat, the tools, the teacher; those adjustments showed I was listening.

It didn’t fix everything, but it built trust.

3. Remember That Every Day Doesn’t Have to Be Balanced

You won’t hit every subject every day. That’s okay.

If your child walked away curious or confident, the day wasn’t wasted!

Final Thoughts

This is when the carefully crafted calendar in your head gets shredded.

You rip out the plan, hold onto your peace, and try again tomorrow.

Not every lesson needs to be taught by the book.

Not every win looks like a worksheet.

Sometimes the win is just avoiding a meltdown and making room for something meaningful.

Let the lesson come through the moment.

The books will still be there tomorrow.
