Year-round Homeschooling: Why We Plan Without the Pressure

I used to try and stick to a calendar. Really stick to it.

Each block had a subject, every subject had a time. I was set up with color codes, timers, and a sense of duty to “stay on track.”

It stressed me out baaad! Because Croix would need more time in one area… and I’d be watching the clock. We’d hit 3 hours and I’d think, “We’re behind.” We’d rush through writing so we could get to science; and then we’d forget half of it the next day!

I realized I wasn’t leading with love. I was leading with fear. Fear of not doing enough. Fear of falling behind some invisible benchmark. Fear of failing him.

Now? We still plan. I still update our calendar every Sunday and now monthly (or whenever…so both my husband and I can stay in sync). But we don’t put times.

We don’t block our lives by the hour. We block by intention.

If Croix needs 2 hours on math, we give him that. If he zips through language arts in 20 minutes, we celebrate and move on. If I need a break or a self-care day, I take it and adjust the plan later. Our calendar isn’t rigid, it’s living…it’s flexible because our child is human! And humans have moods, energy shifts, tough days, and “aha!” moments. Why fight that when you can flow with it?

We homeschool year-round because learning is life for us. That doesn’t mean it’s intense or unfun. In the summer, it’s lighter but still intentional. Every day we’re planting seeds. Whether through books, conversations, bike rides, or play.

💡 What Leading With Love Means:

👉🏾 It means pausing when your child is frustrated.

👉🏾 It means leaning in when they’re curious.

👉🏾 It means not letting the clock rob you of real progress.

👉🏾 It means making space for joy and rest.

👉🏾 It means letting learning fit them…not just a schedule.

We’re still learning structure.

But now it serves us, we don’t serve it.

If you’ve been feeling boxed in by a strict homeschool schedule, this is your reminder:

📅 Plan hypothetically. Lead with love & adjust when needed.

You can still get it done.

You can still grow.

But it doesn’t have to cost your peace!
