As I watched Croix kick a little stronger, stay underwater a little longer, and try again without fear. And it hit me: we’ve come a long way in this swim journey!
This is his third official attempt at learning to swim. The first time was at the YMCA when he was just 3 years old. They dunked him under on the first day, his very first time ever getting in a pool. He was devastated. It stole his confidence and left him afraid of the water.
Later, we tried a more specialized swim facility in another state. They did a swim test first, and the instructor gently said, “His confidence is shot.” And I knew it. So I waited. I didn’t push. I gave him time, time to feel ready again.
In February 2024, for his 5th birthday, we went to Costa Rica. It was there; watching other kids laugh, splash, and play…that something shifted. He wanted to join in. And he did. Slowly. Bravely. The confidence started to come back!
When we got home, I signed him up for neighborhood swim lessons. He tried his best, even when the water was cold; so cold he’d shake, and couldn’t concentrate. Still, he gave it everything. But with therapy, karate, T-ball, homeschooling, and a move in progress, we couldn’t make the schedules work. We had to pause.
Now, we’ve moved and found a new swim school. Warm, indoor pool. Gentle instructors. After researching thoroughly, we enrolled. It’s a bit expensive but it’s worth every single penny!
He started in group classes and then transitioned to private lessons; probably the best decision we’ve made so far. Now, he’s excited! He’s trying harder every week. He’s building trust with his body, with the water, and with himself.
And me? I’m watching, cheering, scared sometimes, and praying. I’m not the strongest swimmer myself, but I know how important this skill is. If I’m not around, I want him to not only know how to swim but be able to save himself. That’s my hope. That’s my prayer.
So we’ll keep showing up. Flipper shoes, try-agains, and all. Because courage doesn’t always look like fearlessness; it looks like trying again, and again, and again!!!
